According to a recent survey from Microsoft, “41% of workers globally are considering handing in their notice” and “junior members of the workforce, including Generation Z, are facing digital burnout” (Sean Fleming). More and more people are waking up to the reality that a “stable job” in the corporate world may not be all it’s cracked up to be. More and more people are hungering for something more fulfilling.
If there’s one thing the global events of the last few years have shown us it’s that permanence is nothing but an illusion, and, yet, we human beings still prefer to hold onto the belief that things will always stay the same. One psychologist has termed this the “spell of solidity”, in which many believe their life circumstances to be stable, cohesive, and relatively unchanging. When the spell is broken, however, (whether it be by an unexpected illness, a death in the family, or any number of unforeseen circumstances) it can lead to an internal crisis, realizing that nothing is in fact permanent. This realization, while it can be troubling, taxing, and downright frightening at times, can also become the first step to our collective freedom - if we only have the courage to let it.
The statistics produced by the aforementioned Microsoft survey may seem grim, but there is actually such a great opportunity for hope and healing if we look a little deeper. Necessity is the mother of invention, as the saying goes, and if more people are waking up to their need for fulfilling work, then we will certainly be seeing droves of people leaving their corporate careers so they can forge their own paths and discover their true callings.
Making a necessary change to discover one’s true calling can be daunting, especially when that change occurs in the workplace. When you live in a society that places so much emphasis on “Do-ing” rather than “Be-ing”, any steps you take toward the latter are radical in nature. You may feel isolated in your decision to leave your job. You may face criticism from those around you who don’t understand why you’d leave the “spell of solidity” for a chance at fulfillment in the unknown.
If you’re considering a big career change that will move you away from purposelessness and closer to fulfillment, here are three things to remember on your journey.
1. You’re not alone.
If you ever begin to feel isolated in your quest toward a more fulfilling lifestyle, just look around! Begin conversations with your friends, neighbors, even coworkers and ask them how they’re genuinely feeling about their life paths. You’ll find that the human experience is nuanced and complex when it comes to work, but that universally almost everyone is searching for a work/life balance that makes them feel fulfilled.
2. Your story is unlike any other.
While it’s true that you’ll never be alone in your journey, it is also true that your journey won’t look exactly like anyone else’s. Forging your own path can be scary, but it can also be exhilarating and completely worthwhile in the end when you look back on all that you’ve worked to create.
3. You have resources.
